My name is Alex he/him (Alexander if you want to be fancy). I am a recent graduate of the Pennslyvania &#38;nbsp;State University where I majored in Graphic Design.

A self described pop music stan, occasional thrifter and plant dad, I love to spend my time listening to my vinyl collection. Recently I have gotten back into reading and enjoy queer written or centered stories.
I am drawn to very bold and bright colors. As a designer I love to tell stories, educate, and share my passions with the world.&#38;nbsp;

WHAT IS IT?A title sequence for Channel 4's It's a Sin. The miniseries focuses on 5 friends from the UK as they navigate the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 80s. 
&#38;nbsp;I first &#38;nbsp;thought &#38;nbsp;of &#38;nbsp;doing &#38;nbsp;a &#38;nbsp;more &#38;nbsp;well &#38;nbsp;known &#38;nbsp;movie &#38;nbsp;or show, &#38;nbsp;but &#38;nbsp;I &#38;nbsp;decided &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;pivot &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;highlight &#38;nbsp;a show &#38;nbsp;that &#38;nbsp;not &#38;nbsp;many &#38;nbsp;have &#38;nbsp;seen &#38;nbsp;but &#38;nbsp;had &#38;nbsp;a &#38;nbsp;very &#38;nbsp;important story &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;tell. &#38;nbsp;With &#38;nbsp;little &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;no information &#38;nbsp;on &#38;nbsp;how &#38;nbsp;HIV/AIDS &#38;nbsp;was &#38;nbsp;spread, &#38;nbsp;people &#38;nbsp;feared and &#38;nbsp;began &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;blame &#38;nbsp;the &#38;nbsp;gay community &#38;nbsp;as &#38;nbsp;they &#38;nbsp;were &#38;nbsp;hit &#38;nbsp;the &#38;nbsp;hardest. &#38;nbsp;I &#38;nbsp;wanted &#38;nbsp;to utilize &#38;nbsp;HIV/AIDS &#38;nbsp;posters &#38;nbsp;from &#38;nbsp;the &#38;nbsp;1980s and &#38;nbsp;90s &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;create &#38;nbsp;a &#38;nbsp;shocking &#38;nbsp;and &#38;nbsp;unsettling &#38;nbsp;title sequence &#38;nbsp;that &#38;nbsp;puts &#38;nbsp;queer &#38;nbsp;history &#38;nbsp;at &#38;nbsp;the &#38;nbsp;forfront while &#38;nbsp;capturing &#38;nbsp;the &#38;nbsp;spirit &#38;nbsp;of &#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;show &#38;nbsp;and &#38;nbsp;its &#38;nbsp;characters. The &#38;nbsp;posters &#38;nbsp;I &#38;nbsp;chose &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;use &#38;nbsp;were &#38;nbsp;carefully &#38;nbsp;selected to &#38;nbsp;reveal &#38;nbsp;subtle &#38;nbsp;nuances &#38;nbsp;to &#38;nbsp;a &#38;nbsp;characters’ personality &#38;nbsp;or &#38;nbsp;storyline.

	WHAT IS IT?A rebrand for the bakery, Chew Chew Bun. The only thing we had to keep was the name and original menu items. Deliverables include, a menu, takout container and a Covid era deliverabe, for which I chose mini handsanitizers.

	PROCESSAfter being inspired by some of my favorite types of buns, Kings Hawaiian, I chose to rebrand Chew Chew Bun as a Hawaiian themed bakery located in San Fransico, California. I knew I wanted bright bold colors and I decided to focus on the plants and flowers of Hawaii. My biggest inspiration was the plumeria flower, which you can see in the logo as well as the shape of the menu. I knew a lot of people were planning on using seamless patterns, so I wanted to go in a different direction and focus on making and overlaying textures.

	For my Covid deliverable, I decided to make hand sanitizers as well as a matching stand. During the pandemic everyone had a bunch of these laying around, hoarding them, stashing them everywhere from their bookbags to their cars. It acts as a nice gesture as well as a promotional material with the website and phone number on the label. I hand dyed each hand sanitizer bottle while getting pink food coloring all over my hands. I also painstakingly sorted the individual flower beads for hours currating the right color scheme for each bottle.&#38;nbsp;

	WHAT IS IT?A branding package for a Botanical Festival including a poster, information booklet, and admission tickets. 

Coming from my new found interest in plants and quickly having too many, I wanted to create a festival where you could learn more about them and take a few home. To capture these plants I decided to create watercolor paintings to drive the branding and imagery of the project.&#38;nbsp;

WHAT IS IT?
“I Hold You You Hold Me” is a book and following campaign focused on the artwork of Bo Logan and discusses the topics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). We focused on creating a body of work that that would hightlight Bo’s story while normalizing and fostering discussions surrounding these topics.&#38;nbsp;

	FINDING AN ARTIST
For this project we were tasked with finding and collaborating with a creative from a diverse community. When looking for an artist after about 3 weeks in, due to a change in the project and personal reasons our artist at the time decided to pull out and we had to quickly find a new artist to showcase. This is where we stumbled upon Bo Logan aka Dr. Bolognie on Instagram. Bo is a LGBTQ artist based in Los Angelos, CA.&#38;nbsp; He struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder and OCD, which he expresses through his art and manifests itself through lines and shapes. 
In our inital conversations with him we wanted to know what his goals were with his art are and what he wanted to see come out of our collaboration. He was very interested in seeing his art in an immersive space and shared sentiments of wanting to educate others. This led us to create a coffee table-style book to educate people on mental health while using Bo as a narrator. To go along with the book, we created a surrounding campaign culminating in a book lauch at a physical space.&#38;nbsp;

	THE BOOKThe book is titled “I Hold You, You Hold Me”, which is a quote pulled from one of Bo’s pieces. For us this quote represents the connection that Bo had with his art and his mental health, a cycle of support. &#38;nbsp;His art has helped him process and deal with his emotions and his past whether he is using it to reprsent things or just as a form of escapsism. The book itself is a curation of Bo’s artwork, his own story, poems, quotes, educational material, and stories from others.The book aims to create a starting place for sometimes difficult conversations about mental health. The final product is entirely handmade, including the diecuts, spot gloss on the cover, and the stitched binding.&#38;nbsp;

	THE PHYSICAL SPACETo accompany the book lauch was a physical space meant to be set up a at a book store or cafe. This installation begins to bring you in Bo’s art with shapes from his projects coming down from the ceiling. The space acts as a catalyst for conversation. You can sit down and read the book here or discuss it with a stranger or friend. You could even have a meet and great with the artist. We really wanted to foster the beginning of conversations surrounding mental health.&#38;nbsp;

Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 Pandemic we were unable to showcase the physical space in person. The space was supposed to come to life for our Fall 2021 exhibition.

	PROCESSAfter being assigned the word pet, at first I was a little lost on what to do. I am not a big pet or animal person. I have two dogs at home but I’d rather take care of my plants. But I thought more about my dogs and how much they love frisbees. They destory them, and we go through them so quickly. We even hide them so maybe they’ll last longer. This led me to the idea of a subscription box for dog frisbees.
For the packaing I wanted to embrace the shape of the frisbee instead of just inserting it on a cardboard rectangle like current fisbee packaging. To make it a box that people would want to keep around I decided to make the pull out drawer double as a water bowl. The drawer is lined with pet safe sealent to last for up to 10 uses. Whether you are on the go, at the park, or in your backyard you have a water bowl on hand to keep your pet hydrated.

	WHAT IS IT?Defy is a high couture fashion magazine based on the musical Wicked.&#38;nbsp;For this project we had to curate every outfit, makeup look, photoshoot, and layout, as well as the physical contruction of the magazine.&#38;nbsp;

	SETTING THE SCENEFocusing on the two main characters Elphaba and Glinda, I tried to show their contrast through colors, jewelry and style. I also wanted to highlight Elphaba’s journey coming into her own as she gains confidence and her power grows.

	GETTING THE SHOTAfter sewing custom oversized sleeves and multiple trips to the arboretum on freezing cold days this shoot below was scrapped in favor of the studio setup. It was too similar to the other outdoor shoot and was not hitting the same level of confidence as the other ones held.

This whole process was a lot of trial and error. For 6 weeks I worked around busy schedules, fitting in photoshoots whenever I could. I brushed up on my sewing skills, altering and scrapping different outfits. I also quickly learned how to apply makeup and blend eyeshadow. I also had to hand place each sparkle on Glinda’s face.&#38;nbsp;

	WHAT IS IT?A photographic cover and a second typographic book cover repurposing scrapped photos. These covers aim to illustrate the feeling of a young adult novel centered on self discovery and queer love.

	REPURPOSING After hours of throwing fabric in my model’s face and wrapping her in holographic foil, I knew I couldn’t let these photos go to waste.These photos did not originally line up with the concept of their intended project and were scrapped. They explore the use of textures and the idea of obstructing ones own self image. This initial idea led me to adapt it to a young adult novel based on the song “Heaven in Hiding” by Halsey.

	PHOTOGRAPHIC COVER
I started looking at how I can play on the dichotomy of heaven and hell. I first played around with pushing the colors very red and keeping them vibrant. 
Playing off of the title I wanted to physically represent the hiding of this heaven that is being sought out.
To accomplish this I created a second more angelic cover under the dust jacket that pokes through a bit to show there is more to be discovered and that there are two sides to every story.

	
	TYPOGRAPHIC COVERFor this cover I wanted it to be more of an opposite as well as a compliment to the photographic cover. I took similar photos from the same session and made them lighter to contrast the previous cover and reflect the heaven aspect of the title.&#38;nbsp;

	As for the type I started off trying to physically hide the text on the cover. This was not working out so I went in a different direction, having no text on the front cover at all. 
This forces the viewer to pick up the book and figure out what its about and find the title. One challenge with this was making sure the title was easily found elsewhere so people could identify it and still gain an interest in the book.
